Brown Takes First at 2013 IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu World Masters Championship

October 2013 - Chikara Weightlifting Club member Vera Brown placed first at the 2013 IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu World Masters Championship in the Senior 1 Featherweight division at the Pyramid at California State University, Long Beach. Congratulations, Vera!


Gold for McGill and Bielawski at Royal Canadian Henley Regatta

August 2013 - Congratulations to Jill McGill and Adrienne Bielawski of the Southern California Scullers Club for their great showing at the 2013 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in Ontario. The girls took gold in the Under 19 Double 2000 meter race, finishing over 4 seconds faster than the second place team. The very next day McGill and Bielawski took fourth place in the Under 23 Lightweight Women's Double. After five days of racing, McGill took up her racing shell on the last day of the Regatta for the Under 17 Women Single Finals, where she placed second. With the summer season behind them, McGill is back home and focused, training for her next race in October, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA.


Johnson Braves Waves, Takes 1st in Santa Monica

June 2013 - Powerful surf and ten-foot tall waves couldn't stop experienced paddle boarder Larry Johnson, who placed first in the Elite 12'6" board class at the 2013 Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race and Ocean Festival. With the high surf and safety concerns emerging, several of the youth races were cancelled, but that didn't stop the pros and advanced racers from competing. Johnson took first place in the 5.5 mile long race in the open class long course with a time of 1:40:35.

McGill Sisters Successful at Regionals and Ready to Take on Nationals

May 2012 - Congratulations to the McGill sisters, Jasmine and Jill, for dominating the competition at the 2012 US Rowing Regional Championships which was held on May 5th and 6th at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California. The McGill sisters received a silver medal in the Lightweight Double, finishing only 0.4 seconds behind the gold medal winning team and was part of the Open Quad that won gold. In addition, Jill McGill and Mackenzi Sherman received gold medals in the Open Double. Immediately following the weekend competition, they returned home, focused to begin their five weeks of training before the start of the upcoming US Rowing Youth National Championships on June 8th-10th in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.


Toyota Alvarks are 2012 JBL Champions

April 2012 - Ken Tanaka and the Toyota Alvarks win the 2012 Japan Basketball League Championships. Toyota Alvarks finished the regular season in second place behind the Aishin Sea Horses, however in the JBL Finals the Alvarks overcame the regular season winners by winning the Final Series 3-1. They led from the first minutes of the final game and never looked back, winning Game 4 in decisive fashion, 83 to 64.

 

Johnson Metals at 3rd Annual Hovie SUP Festival

April 2012 - Gusty winds of up to nearly 20-miles an hour on a portion of the course along the Back Bay in Newport Beach challenged participants of the 3rd Annual NAC Hovie SUP Festival which was held on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Novice paddler Larry Johnson, with less than two months of competitive racing and two prior races, completed the Elite 12'6 class 6-mile race in third place.


Ken Tanaka and the Toyota Alvarks Crowned #1 Team in Japan

January 2012 – Starting forward Ken Tanaka and the Toyota Alvarks were crowned the 2012 Emperor's Cup Champions. The Emperor's Cup, an annual basketball competition in Japan to determine the country's best basketball team, was held earlier this month from January 1st through the 9th. Teams from all levels participate annually and the winner is crowned the best team in Japan.


2011 ChikaraSport Lift for Breast Cancer a Success

October 2011 – Thanks to all of the lifters, coaches, and event staff from both Mammograms In Action and ChikaraSport, this year's ChikaraSport Lift for Breast Cancer was a success. Not only was there exciting lifting with multiple personal records set, but, more importantly, the event raised over $1,300 for the non-profit organization Mammograms In Action. Mammograms In Action strives to increase awareness for the importance of regular breast cancer screening and raises money to provide diagnostic procedures for those who are unable to afford them. Chikara Weightlifting Club Makes Strong Showing at State Games

August 2011 – The 2011 State Games of America took place this past weekend in San Diego, California. With only six of the fifty-plus member Olympic weightlifting team present for the competition, the Chikara Weightlifting Club walked away with five individual medals (two gold and three silver medals). McGill Sisters Finish Second at the US Rowing Youth National Championships

June 2011 - Jasmine and Jill McGill of the Long Beach Rowing Association were awarded silver medals at the US Rowing Youth National Championships held on June 10-12 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The McGill sisters finished the Women's Lightweight Youth 2x A-Finals with a time of 08:18.67, edging out the third place LBJC team by 00:00.21 seconds. The US Rowing Youth National Championships featured more than 1,500 athletes from high school and junior rowing programs across the country competing for national titles in 18 boat classes.


Artesia Punishers Are the 2011 Triple Crown Sports 14U Champions

May 2011 - Congratulations to Monica Navarrete and the Artesia Punishers, champions of the 2011 Triple Crown Sports 14U Tournament held on April 16-17 in Palm Springs, California. Pitcher Monica Navarrete kept an explosive offensive opponent to a mere two runs leading up to the last inning in the final game of the tournament. Unfortunately, Monica was struck in the shin by a line drive forcing her to leave the game with the Punishers up six runs to two. The Punishers however, went on to win the game seven to six.


Freshmen Atwood and Davis Making Big Impact for the Rams and Trojans

November 2010 - Freshman Emily Atwood (below) started the season at libero for Fordham University, was moved to defensive specialist in mid-season, but is once again the starting libero for the Rams as they head into the Atlantic-10 Championship Playoffs.

 

Erika Davis (above) has been the starting middle blocker for the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans all season. She is leading the Lady Trojans with 76 blocks and has accumulated 192 kills. Erika has recently been named first team All-Conference.


Keith Smith and the Highline Volleyball Club's 18 Black Team are the 2010 USA Volleyball Junior National Champions

July 2010 - Setter Keith Smith and the members of the Highline Volleyball Club's 18s Black team won gold at the 2010 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships held in Austin, Texas.  The team went a perfect 12-0, losing only one game enroute to becoming the 2010 Junior National Champions.


Navarrete and the Artesia Punishers Heading to National Championships After Successful Performance at State Championship

June 2010 - Artesia Punisher pitcher and outfielder, Monica Navarrete and her 12U team went undefeated for the first two days of the State Championships held in Hemet, California during the Memorial Day weekend. Despite losing two games on the final day, the Punishers qualified for Nationals and will be traveling to Bloomington, Indiana in August.


Navarrete and the Artesia Punishers Dominate 2010 Tournament Play Heading Into State Championships

May 2010 - Artesia Punisher pitcher and outfielder, Monica Navarrete and her 12U team have won all but one tournament this season. The most recent wins were the USSSA Swing for Summer Tournament and the USSSA 14U Spring Fling. Best of luck to the girls as they prepare for the State Championships in Hemet, California.


Erika Davis of California High and Protege Volleyball Club to Play at Hannibal-LaGrange

May 2010 - Congratulations to Erika Davis, a senior at California High School in Whittier and a member of Protege Volleyball Club's 18s Elite Team. She will be headed to Missouri this fall to play volleyball at Hannibal-LaGrange, a Division I NAIA school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.


Jasmine McGill and the LBJC Women's Junior Lightweight Eight Take Second at the San Diego Crew Classic

May 2010 - Congratulations to Jasmine McGill and her Long Beach Junior Crew Women's Lightweight Eight teammates for taking second in the 2000 meters at the San Diego Crew Classic. Not only was this the largest all-eights regatta in the nation, with more than 3,400 athletes, but the LBJC boat lost by only six seconds to Los Gatos, last year's National Champions.


Emily Atwood of Whittier Christian and Protege Volleyball Club To Play At Fordham University

March 2010 - Congratulations to Emily Atwood, a senior at Whittier Christian and a member of Protege Volleyball Club's 18s Elite Team, who will be headed to New York this fall to play volleyball at Fordham University, a Division I NCAA school and a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.


Chun Sets New PR's and Records At the SCS All-Star Festival

February 2010 - Mei Ling Chun placed first in the 200 IM and 100 Breast and third in the 100 Fly. Her first place finish in the 200 IM broke the meet record set in 2007. Mei Ling now holds the SCS All-Star Swim Festival Meet record for the 200 IM. She was also part of the 200 Freestyle Relay that broke the SCS All-Star Swim Festival Meet record set in 2007. Mei Ling did a personal best in both record setting events.


Chun, McGill, Lo, and Robbins of the Trident Swim Club Break Top 10 At Spring Junior Olympics

February 2010 - The Trident Girls earned three 8th place finishes and one 12th place finish in the relays, while Mei Ling Chun finished second in the 100 IM behind the National Record Holder Ella Eastin. Chun also won bronze in the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke. Congratulations Tridents!


Emily Atwood of Whittier Christian Digs Up Some Awards

November 2009 - Congratulations to senior libero, Emily Atwood for another great volleyball season. For the second straight year, Emily was selected to the 2nd team All-CIF and 1st team All-Area. She also received the All-Tournament Player award at the Arcadia Tournament


 

Whittier Christian High School Girls Volleyball Team Wins CIF Title and Second Straight League Title

November 2009 - Congratulations to the Whittier Christian High School Girls Volleyball Team for another great season. The girls went undefeated in league play, won each CIF playoff and championship game in three straight, and advanced to the second round in the State Tournament.

 

Whittier Christian's Hunter Awarded Second All-Tournament Team Selection of the Season

October 2009 - Congratulations to sophomore libero, Ashley Hunter for being named to the 2009 Mayfair High School Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team. This marks Ashley's second All-Tournament Team selection of the season.


2009 World Rowing Junior Championships

August 2009 - Mark Reinis and Nick Trojan finished 25th at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. The pair now set their sights on London in 2012.

July 2009 - Mark Reinis and Nick Trojan of Long Beach Junior Crew swept the best two-out-of-three finals of the junior men's double sculls at the 2009 Junior World Championships Trials on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. They will represent the United States next month at the World Rowing Junior Championships in France.

June 2009 - Congratulations to the Long Beach Junior Crew Varsity Boys Team for winning silver and bronze medals at the 2009 US Rowing Youth National Championships held on June 12th-14th at Harsha Lake in Cincinnati, Ohio.
